West Ham and Tim Steidten Part Ways After Transfer Turmoil

Tim Steidten has officially left his role as West Ham United’s technical director following a turbulent spell at the club.

The 45-year-old former footballer’s departure became inevitable after new manager, Graham Potter, arrived and installed Kyle Macaulay as the head of recruitment, effectively rendering Steidten surplus to requirements.

Initially backed by chairman David Sullivan, Steidten oversaw a transfer campaign of more than £120 million but struggled to deliver the quality needed. His signings, including Niclas Fullkrug and Konstantinos Mavropanos, failed to address key squad weaknesses.

His recruitment missteps, combined with his strained relationships with former managers David Moyes and Julen Lopetegui, are believed to have ultimately led to his downfall.

A major regret was missing out on Colombian striker Jhon Duran. West Ham pursued him last summer but refused to meet Aston Villa’s £40 million-valuation. In January, Villa surprisingly offered him again, shocking Steidten, but the Hammers failed to finalise a deal.

Duran later moved to Al Nassr for approximately £70 million, further highlighting the Hammers’ recruitment struggles.

With West Ham now battling inconsistency under Potter, Steidten’s tenure will be remembered for wasted opportunities and costly misjudgements in the transfer market.
